Salt-laden air is the harshest ordinary environment a window will ever face: chloride settles on every surface, stays damp, and works on any weakness in coating or metal. Aluminium is inherently one of the best coastal materials — it does not rust like steel or rot like timber — but "inherently good" still needs the right preparation, coating and hardware. That package is what "marine grade" means when we specify it.
What marine-grade actually includes
- Pre-treatment: the profile is cleaned and conversion-coated before powder ever touches it; enhanced marine pre-treatment (including higher-etch processes) is the single most important line on the spec, because coatings fail from beneath, at invisible preparation faults.
- Coating class: thicker or higher-specification powder systems tested for coastal exposure, holding gloss and colour against salt and UV. Our finishes are guaranteed for up to 25 years, with marine options for surf-line postcodes.
- Hardware: stainless steel hinges, rollers and fixings, plus corrosion-tested locking parts — the moving metal fails before the frame if specified carelessly.
- Drainage and detailing: profiles that drain and dry rather than pond, and gaskets that keep salt spray out of the chambers.
How close is "coastal"?
Airborne salinity falls quickly with distance. Within a few hundred metres of surf, everything above applies without argument; within a couple of miles of the sea, marine pre-treatment remains cheap insurance; further inland, standard architectural finishes are designed for the job. Estuaries, harbours and exposed cliff-top sites behave "closer" than the map suggests — wind exposure also raises structural loads, which affects glass thickness and fixing schedules on big sliding doors and screens.
Owner's part of the bargain
Every coastal coating guarantee assumes basic washing: rinse frames with fresh water and a mild detergent a few times a year (more on the exposed elevation), so salt never sits for seasons. It is ten minutes with a hose, and it is the difference between a finish that lasts decades and one that chalks early at the drip edges. Hardware thanks you for an annual silicone-free lubrication too.
Specifying a coastal project
Tell us the postcode and the exposure — beachfront, estuary, clifftop — and the quotation will state pre-treatment, coating class, hardware grade and glass loads accordingly, across windows, doors and balustrades (a frequent coastal companion). Start with the quote form; sea view optional but encouraged.
This article is general guidance, not a project specification. Performance figures such as U-values depend on configuration and glazing, and your quotation states the tested values for your exact specification.
